Odbicie. Jestem jak ty zapewne - nowa instalacja w Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego

Odbicie. Jestem jak Ty zapewne – interactive AI installation with my music

On the 30th of July,a new exhibition “Odbicie. Jestem jak ty zapewne” premiered at the Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego.  The exhibition features an interactive installation, that uses AI to analyse visitors features and find his/her`s “siblings” from the Uprising.  Designed by Superskrypt / Podpunkt, it`s theirs (and mine) third collaboration with museum – thank you Anna Grzechnik for trusting me once again Multiple media outlets –  here is an article from Gazeta Wyborcza.

The soundtrack features voices, violin solo, piano and strings – all resampled and transformed to create an unusual, emotional space for the visitors.

I have written about my other project for Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego in a blog post Soundtrack for Topografia at Warsaw Rising Museum.

My score for Odbicie. Jestem jak ty zapewne will premiere today (01.08.2019) on Youtube.

Legenda o Magiczne Perle (The Legend of The Magic Pearl)

The Legend of the Magic Pearl – an unusual soundtrack for a spectacle in the middle of a lake

The Legend of the Magic Pearl (Legenda o Magicznej Perle) is a project designed as a new format of entertainment – ‘an aquatic drama’.

In essence, it`s a mutlimedia spectacle set up on a specially build stage in the middle of a lake – with actors, mapping, lights, fountains and – of course – music. The show is a part of Legendia at Night, which is special, weekly event in Legendia amusement park in Chorzów. Directed by Jan Pomierny (known for his work as a producer on Ambition dir. Tomek Bagiński) and supported by a group of ex-Platige Image producers (Magdalena Pieńkowska and Łukasz Alwast), The Legend of The Magic Pearl was a huge and exciting undertaking.

The Soundtrack

Given the complex nature of the project, the decision was made to pace and build the narrative around the music – which basically meant that the score had to be written and completed before everything else. The choreography, mapping, lights and fountain programming were all timed and synced to my score. The writing process was a particulary rewarding experience – since there was no picture to guide my work (only the plot written out) I could do as I please in terms of timings of scenes, transitions and drama.

Without the constrains of the visuals, othere creative choices were limitless as well – intrumentation, electronic elements (the score has a suprising amout of synthesizers), guitars (with the fantastic Olo Grockocki) and all the usual, aquatic sounds we recorded with Kamil Rogiński (waterphone included – it is an aquatic drama after all !). The orchestral strings were overdubbed with violins and cellos (Piotr and Maciej Nermer).

The Collaboration

The Legend of The Magic Pearl was a different project for me for one more reason. Since my work has directly influenced all the members of the team, I was in constant creative dialogue not only with the director, producers and animators (Karolina Jacewicz), but also with Iza Szostak, a well-established choreographer and Bogusław Palewicz – a renowned lighting director known for his superproductions of Wagner` The Ring Cycle at Opera Wrocławska*.
Fun fact: I actually attended one of those productions – The Valkyrie in 2004 – I still have the poster !

Maciek Dobrowolski & Kamil Rogiński - high five !

Recording session with Kamil Rogiński

We have just finished a 6 hour recording session with Kamil Rogiński, a fantastic musician I last worked with while scoring Clockwise. I always enjoy working with Kamil – recording sessions are always fun, creative and full of moments of improvised brilliance. Last time we recorded for a movie, this time it is a different format – The Legend of the Magic Pearl (Legenda o magicznej perle) is an aquatic fantasy drama set up on the lake of Legendia – Silesian Amusement Park.

This time we recorded various ethnic flutes (Xiao, small traditional slavic flutes), a kitara, low percussion and a beautiful-sounding waterphone (the theme of the show is water wink wink). The recording session took place in Quality Studio, a facility I enjoy recording in while in Warsaw.

Borys Szyc on stage as Sherlock Holmes

Borys Szyc as Sherlock Holmes – full performance & soundtrack

Watch as Borys Szyc turns into Sherlock Holmes for the 2019 Off Camera closing ceremony. I wrote the soundtrack for the full performancemusic full of unusual sounds and hard-hitting riffs, which sounds more like steam punk comic, rather than a historical novel.

Storytel Sherlock Holmes @ Off Camera

Storytel Sherlock Holmes soundtrack @ Off Camera

During Mastercard Off Camera closing ceremony Borys Szyc performed excerpts of Sherlock Holmes, the new audiobook by Storytel. Set in a dark concert hall with no props and no scenography, the performace was relying solely on the actor`s skills. In this setting, the music had to became the props and scenography and set the tone for the show.

Clockwise - soundtrack album cover.

Clockwise – my score for the first Qatari movie in history

Featuring a magnificent score and shot in various locations in Qatar, including Souq Waqif, Wakra and Shamal, ‘Clockwise’ is Qatar’s first feature-length film, as well as director Khalifa Al-Muraikhi’s feature debut.

DOHA FILM INSTITUTE

The first movie ever done in Qatar

I was lucky enough to have scored a first movie ever produced in Qatar, and thus be a part of a significant moment in the history of Qatari cinematography – and all of that happend when I was just 24. The film, inspired by an early 20th century legend, is set in a fishing village in northern Qatar. A ship drowns and its sole survivors are Atique Bin Barood and a baby in a box. Atique saves the baby, Saad, and raises him as his own. When Saad grows up, he discovers his father’s secret relationship with a djinn. The djinn had taught Atique and three of his friends the art of playing ‘Fjiri’ – the specific repertoire of vocal music sung by the pearl divers of the Arab states. Atique and his friends soon find themselves in adverse circumstances. Help soon arrives from an unexpected quarter – Saad’s female djinn.

Score production

The score was written in late 2009 and early 2010, with the recording session taking place around June 2010. I was lucky enough to have Robert Amirian on board, a prolific polish music producer, known, among others, for founding NEXT POP label (Fis-moll, KARI, BOKKA). All the solists were recorded with Robert: Mateusz Smoczyński (violin), KARI (vocals), Marcin Rumiński (whistle & mandolin) and Kamil Rogiński (darabukas, various flutes and percussion).

The string orchestra (Sinfonia Viva) was recorded at the famous Studio Koncertowe Polskiego Radia im. Witolda Lutosławskiego by Tadeusz Mieczkowski and conducted by the renowned composer and jazz pianist, Krzysztof Herdzin. All the orchestrations were done by Radzimir Dębski, also known for his orchestral hip-hop arrangements under the alias JIMEK.

After the movie premiere, which I had the privilige of attending in Doha, the score got wonderful reviews  and eventually was released by an international film music label.

Lech Coaster at Legendia

Recording soundtrack for Legendia with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt muscians and Platige Image

The music was written for an animated movie, that visitors watch just before going to Lech Coaster –the biggest roller coaster in this part of Europe. Since building Lech Coaster was a huge investment and a spectacular undertaking, proper care was taken by Platige Image to create a compelling story and theme for the attraction – including the soundtrack.

To match the epicness of the ride on the roller coaster with my music, I needed to get some of the best musicians out there – I decided to hire Percival Schuttenbach as performers: theses are the musicians that co-wrote and performed on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt soundtrack.

The animated movie was produced by the biggest polish post-production and vfx company Platige Image and directed by Rafał Sadowy
